So You Are Thinking Of Building A Deck

October 10, 2007

You have decided that you are ready to build a deck or a
gazebo in your backyard. There are many things to keep in
mind. You can build a wonderful home away from home if you
follow some basic rules and carefully plan your
entire project, before getting started. What are you
intending to use your new deck for?
A place to relax? A place to entertain? A place to put that
hot tub you have always dreamed of?

You will need to determine the
location for your deck before you get started. Do
you want it to be butted up against your house, do you want
to
extend your back porch, or do you want to create a
completely
separate gazebo or a stand-alone deck for a hot tub? Is the
area easily accessible?
Does it flow with the rest of the house? Is it going to be
too close to your property
line?

Now it is time to decide on a design.
You can view literally thousands of photos on the Internet
of
decks, gazebos, and decks made especially for hot tubs, to
give
you some inspiration. With hot tubs in particular you can
be as
creative as your budget allows. If you want to build a deck
or gazebo
specially designed for a hot tub, you will want to decide
if the hot tub
will be sunken into the deck, or if it will sit on top of
the deck. If it is to be sunken,
will you be able to easily access the internal components
if needed? If it sits
on top of the deck you may want to consider including
stairs in
your plans to create easy access to your hot tub.

So you have the area, use and basic design figured out. Now
is time to consider
what materials you are going to use. Do you want a
traditional treated wood deck? This
will require maintenance, such as cleaning and sealing. Or
is a composite fit better into your
lifestyle? There are many different composites available:
Trex, ProCell, and EverGrain to
mention a few. So why not go ahead and build that deck you
have been dreaming of.....
